The Kennels

This new house situated in the National Park overlooking Loch Lomond utilizes a derelict, former kennels structure to create a variety of unique internal spaces and external forms.

The existing stone structure is transformed into the core or spine of the new dwelling allowing immediate access to the new accommodation over three different levels. As a result, this central space becomes the centre of gravity of the new composition. Despite its modest 135sqm area, three bedrooms are accommodated with a flowing sequence of dining/living and kitchen spaces giving glimpses to countryside views both near and far. The tent-like geometry of the copper roofs provides each internal space with individual ceiling configurations and sources of daylight and views. This intensifies what are in effect, modest-scaled spaces and draws the outside and inside together in different ways. Our proposals create the illusion of a small group of autonomous buildings huddled together forming a settlement where old stone meets new architecture.
